After more than a decade working in the financial industry, Michael McCandless decided to make a complete change of direction and retrained as a massage therapist.

He established The Ark in 2004 with a simple aim: to help people feel more comfortable in their bodies through effective, hands-on massage therapy.

After many years operating from a dedicated treatment space in Leigh-on-Sea, Michael relocated his practice to Canvey Island in 2026, where he now works by appointment from a private treatment room.

Over the years, Michael has worked with a wide range of clients experiencing muscle tension, postural strain, work-related discomfort and sports-related issues. His approach is practical, tailored, and focused on addressing the underlying causes of tension rather than simply treating symptoms.

Experience & Approach

Michael is a fully qualified massage therapist and a member of the Guild of Complementary Practitioners. His work is informed by experience, ongoing learning, and a belief that no two people require exactly the same treatment.

Sessions are adapted to the individual, taking into account how tension presents, how the body moves, and what the client is hoping to achieve from treatment.
